California Adds New World Screwworm Entry Requirements for Equines

California implemented added New World Screwworm entry requirements effective June 12, 2026. The requirements apply to equids and other warm-blooded animals coming from affected areas.

What changed

Animals originating from an infested zone require a premovement inspection within five days before arrival, an electronic Certificate of Veterinary Inspection containing the required NWS statement, and an NWS movement certificate when required by the state of origin or federal officials.

Why equine operations should care

A California boarding barn accepting horses from affected states should verify the documents before the horse departs, not when the trailer reaches the gate.

What operators should do now

• Check CDFA’s current affected-area list before accepting an incoming horse.
• Require owners and haulers to confirm eCVI documentation before departure.
• Add wound inspection and travel-origin questions to intake procedures.
• Keep transport and health documents in the horse’s active file.
