Florida’s Equine Disease Map Gives Barns a County-Level Risk Tool

Florida’s reportable equine disease map gives horse owners and barn managers a county-level view of reported disease activity, including EHV neurologic disease, EIA, strangles, rabies, West Nile virus, and Eastern equine encephalitis.

What changed

FDACS says the map is updated when possible as new occurrences are reported and at least on the first business day of each month.

Why equine operations should care

For a boarding barn, the map is most useful as a planning tool. It can support decisions about travel, isolation, vaccination discussions with a veterinarian, and heightened monitoring when disease activity rises nearby.

What operators should do now

• Review the disease map before major travel or event periods.
• Use current county activity to inform—not replace—veterinary advice.
• Maintain an isolation protocol for new and returning horses.
• Keep vaccination and health records current.
